Karna the Pandava

Karna is the sun of Kunti and the Sun God. Karna himself acknowledges to Krsna of his Pandu lineage.(pg 105). So why is Karna so interested in destroying the Pandavas? It is understood that Karna is thankfull to the Kurus for providing him with a kingdom to rule and he despises Kunti for abandoning him at birth. However, why has he not disclosed to the Kurus of his Pandu lineage?

  1. Karna wasn't interested in destroying all of the Pandavas brothers, he promised Kunti he would only kill Arjuna. And either he would kill Arjuna, or Arjuna would kill him so she would in the end still have 5 sons. I believe that Kunti did not want the Pandavas to know he was related to them so he kept it a secret.

  2. I think that once Karna learns his true lineage, his desire to destroy the Pandavas wanes, and like Sarah said, he promises Kunti to only kill Arjuna.

Karna seems to remain true and virtuous to those individuals that showed him the same. Kunti abandoned him, so in his eyes, he owed her nothing. Duryodhana was welcoming (duty to guests) and immediately gave him a kingdom to rule. Arjuna questioned his lineage and his ability as a Kshatriya.

I believe that if the Pandavas knew Karna was their brother, they would have welcomed him with opened arms, and I believe Karna would have done the same if things had been different (no upcoming war). However, I don't believe the Kurus (especially Duryodhana) would have acted so generously. Would they have cast him out, or simply killed him immediately? Would they have accused him of treachery or being a spy? Whatever would have happened, I don't believe it would have been a positive reaction for Karna.

  3. Kunti wanted his linage to be kept a secret and Karna was honoring her wishes. He had told her that he would only kill Arjuna in battle because Kunti began the war with five sons and he wanted her to come out of the war with five sons. He was not interested in changing his allegiance in the war and did not want to stir up trouble. Also, he was accepted by Duryodhana and did not want to throw away that friendship. If he had told he might have been killed because he was related to the enemy. So I think he just wanted to keep it all quiet, at least until the end of the war.
